Chives (Allium schoenoprasum)

It is a species of flowering plants in the family of Amaryllidaceae. Both the flowers and stems are edible. Very close relatives of the common onion, garlic, shallots, and leeks.  Chives also have insect-repelling properties.  They are great to attract bees. They are native plants to areas of Europe, Asia, and North America.

Fun Fact about Chives

Romans believed chives could relieve pain from sunburn or a sore throat. They also believed by eating chives would increase their blood pressure and act as a diuretic. Romani’s also used chives in fortune-telling. Bunches of chives were hung around their homes to ward off evil. Dutch Farmers fed cattle chives to give a different taste to their cow’s milk.
